The Nigerian Army has declared a three-day mourning period in honour of 17 soldiers who were killed in a deadly attack in Kwana Dutse Local Government Area of Niger State.
The soldiers were reportedly ambushed by armed men in a surprise assault that also affected military outposts in both Niger and Kaduna states. The coordinated attack, which has left many Nigerians grieving, has been described as one of the most devastating in recent times.
In an official statement posted on the Nigerian Army’s website and its verified account on X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, the military said the mourning period would last from June 25 to June 27, 2025. According to the statement, this act is a way of showing respect and appreciation for the soldiers who gave their lives in service to the country.
The Army also confirmed the number of casualties and locations affected. “During this period, all military institutions and personnel across the country will fly the Nigerian Army flag at half-mast,” the statement noted. It also instructed military units nationwide to observe the mourning formally.
The Army further noted that this decision was taken to pay proper tribute to the fallen heroes and to show how much the Army values its personnel. Families and loved ones of the deceased are also being remembered during this time, as the Army extended its deepest condolences to them.
“This mourning period allows the entire nation to take a moment to reflect on the bravery and sacrifice of the soldiers who died protecting the nation,” the Army noted.
