Army Foils Bandit Attack in Taraba, Recovers Weapons During Raid

Troops of the Nigerian Army successfully stopped a planned attack and neutralized a suspected bandit during a recent operation in Taraba State. The incident occurred in Ussa Local Government Area, where soldiers acting on intelligence stormed a known hideout used by criminals in Gafar Village.

The operation was carried out by the 6 Brigade, Sector 3 of Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS) under the mission named Operation Lafiyan Jamaa. This mission is focused on clearing Taraba of bandits and other armed groups threatening the safety of communities in the state.

In a statement released on Saturday, May 3, 2025, military officials said the troops moved quickly following reports about bandits operating in Gafar.

According to the Army, “Troops strategically deployed to monitor the area engaged the criminals in a fierce firefight. One bandit was neutralized during the encounter, while an AK-47 rifle and a motorcycle—previously stolen from a civilian—were recovered,” the statement noted.

The army further explained that this engagement came after reliable information was received from residents in the area. Their quick response helped prevent what could have been another attack on innocent villagers.

In a related event, soldiers responded to another tip-off concerning a group of suspected bandits making their way from Tongo and Garin Alkali in Adamawa State toward the Shana community in Bali Local Government Area. Troops tracked the suspects through the Yunkunssu Forest and made contact with them.

The suspects, realizing they were outgunned, escaped into the forest. However, during a search of the area, troops recovered a locally made revolver, an AK-47 magazine, and three rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition.

“These successful operations underscore the commitment of 6 Brigade, Nigerian Army/Sector 3 OPWS, to ensuring the safety and security of law-abiding citizens across Taraba State,” the Army said.
