Aston Villa Knocks Tottenham Out of FA Cup, Postecoglou Insists Team Can Still Salvage Season

Tottenham Hotspur manager Ange Postecoglou remains determined to turn things around despite another disappointing result that saw his team crash out of the FA Cup. Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa in the fourth round on Sunday, capping off a miserable week for the North London side.

The loss came just days after a heavy 4-0 defeat to Liverpool in the League Cup semi-final, further increasing pressure on Postecoglou. Tottenham’s season has been a challenging one, with the club currently sitting 14th in the Premier League and struggling to find consistency. With only the Europa League left as their last hope for silverware, frustration among fans continues to grow.

Supporters at Villa Park did not hold back their disappointment, calling for club chairman Daniel Levy to step down while also voicing their discontent with Postecoglou and his players. However, the Australian manager remains optimistic, believing his injury-hit squad can still recover in the latter part of the season.

“Nothing really changes. We have a couple of weeks now where we don’t have midweek games,” Postecoglou said.

“We had 11 first-team players out today. Take that out of any team for one game and they would struggle. We’ve been doing that for two and a half months. The players are going out there and giving everything they can. It would be a lot better if they had some help.”

Tottenham’s struggles have been worsened by key injuries to players like Cristian Romero, Micky van de Ven, James Maddison, and Brennan Johnson. Despite this, Postecoglou insists his team remains committed to the fight.

“This group has done an unbelievable job for two and a half months. I can’t praise them enough, playing twice a week since November,” he said.

His future at the club, however, remains uncertain. While Spurs have advanced to the Europa League last 16, doubts linger over whether Postecoglou will still be in charge by then. A strong finish in Europe could be his best hope of keeping his job.

One bright moment in the match came from Mathys Tel, who scored his first goal for Spurs after joining on loan from Bayern Munich. However, his late strike was not enough to rescue the team from another setback.
