The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi (FUAM), has demanded urgent action to secure the release of four female students who were kidnapped on campus. The union also criticized the security situation at the university, blaming weak protection measures for the incident.
The students were reportedly abducted around 8:30 PM on Tuesday, February 25, 2025, while heading to a lecture hall for night studies. Eyewitnesses say the attack was carried out by unidentified gunmen who took the students away, leaving the university community in shock.
In a statement issued by ASUU-FUAM Chairman, Comrade Paul Anyagh, the union condemned the act, describing it as an attack on innocent students.
“With what has happened, we are no longer sure of the safety of our members on campus. This is not the first time such an incident has occurred. A member of our union was previously kidnapped at the university staff quarters. Although he was later released, it exposed the weak security on our campus.”
ASUU-FUAM also recalled past abductions involving students and staff, noting that the repeated cases have raised serious concerns about safety on campus. The union urged authorities to take immediate steps to prevent further occurrences.
As part of its demands, the union called on the university administration and security agencies to ensure the immediate and safe rescue of the kidnapped students. It also stressed the need for urgent improvements to campus security, calling for stronger measures to protect both students and staff.
“We stand in solidarity with our students and parents and hope for the safe release of the abducted students soonest.”
