The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has elected Prof. Chris Piwuna as its new national president, marking a fresh chapter in the union’s leadership. The announcement was made following the union’s 23rd National Delegates Congress, which was held on Sunday in Benin City, Edo State.
Prof. Piwuna, a respected consultant psychiatrist and the current Dean of Student Affairs at the University of Jos, will be taking over from Prof. Victor Osodeke. Prof. Osodeke, who is a professor of Soil Science at the Michael Okpara University of Agriculture in Umudike, Abia State, led ASUU from 2021 until the end of his tenure this year.
Delegates from various universities across Nigeria attended the congress where the new leadership was chosen. The event served as both a leadership transition and a forum to reflect on the direction of the union, especially as it continues to interact with the federal government on several unresolved issues.
Prof. Piwuna is not new to ASUU’s top ranks, having served as the union’s Vice President during the Osodeke-led administration. His work within the union has made him a known figure in matters related to academic welfare and university autonomy.
