Salihu Moh Lukman, the former National Vice Chairman (North West) of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has expressed concerns about the intentions of certain opposition figures in Nigeria.
He cautioned that leaders such as Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rotimi Amaechi, and Kayode Fayemi might prove to be less effective than former Presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Muhammadu Buhari, and the current President, Bola Tinubu.
In his statement, Lukman noted that these opposition leaders are prioritizing personal ambitions over genuine democratic reforms. He argued that their desire to lead a new opposition coalition is driven by self-interest rather than a commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.
He further stated, “The worrying reality is that many of these opposition and displaced politicians with ambitions are highly complicit and have little or no evidential credentials of emerging as better political leaders.”
Lukman criticized these politicians for failing to learn from past mistakes, suggesting that their records in governance do not inspire confidence.
He warned that Nigeria risks ending up with another ineffective leader in 2027 if political institutions are not strengthened. He emphasized that forming a coalition solely to unseat President Tinubu without addressing fundamental governance issues would be futile.
Echoing Peter Obi’s stance, Lukman stated that opposition unity should not be about a mere power grab but about real reforms that benefit Nigerians. He cautioned, “Even when opposition and displaced politicians unite to defeat APC and President Tinubu in 2027, the country may end up with another bad, if not worse, leader.”
