The Supreme Court, on Friday, sacked Julius Abure as the National Chairman of the Labour Party (LP). In response to the judgment, the Chairman of the party’s Caretaker Committee, Senator Nenadi Usman, has described it as a victory for the rule of law and a crucial step for the country’s democracy.
The ruling, issued by a five-member panel of the Supreme Court, overturned a previous decision by the Court of Appeal in Abuja, which had recognized Abure as the party’s leader. The apex court determined that the Court of Appeal lacked the authority to make such a pronouncement, leading to Abure’s removal.
Following the verdict, Usman addressed party members and supporters, urging unity and a renewed commitment to the Labour Party’s goals. She stated that the ruling should not be seen as a battle between winners and losers but as an opportunity for the party to move forward in line with democratic principles.
“The recent ruling by the Supreme Court, which allowed the appeal filed by Senator Nenadi Usman, declaring it meritorious, while dismissing the cross-appeal filed by the Abure faction of the Labour Party as unmeritorious, is a victory for the rule of law and a significant milestone for our democracy,” Usman’s statement read.
She further noted that despite the legal dispute, the Labour Party remains united and committed to building a nation based on justice and fairness. She called on all party members, supporters, and stakeholders to remain calm and focused on their shared vision.
“The Labour Party remains one indivisible family, steadfast in its mission to create a New Nigeria founded on justice, equity, and people-centered governance. We call on all party members, supporters, and stakeholders to remain calm, focused, and committed to the democratic ideals that bind us,” she added.
