Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun, in response to the upcoming August 1 protest, has invited human rights lawyer Ebun Adegboruwa SAN for discussions. The meeting, set to take place on July 30, aims to address security concerns for the planned demonstrations.
The invitation was sent in a letter signed by the IGP’s Principal Staff Officer, Police Commissioner Johnson Adenola. The letter indicates that the purpose of the meeting is to discuss Adegboruwa’s request for police protection for protesters. Adegboruwa, who represents the “Take it Back Movement,” had formally requested security for the demonstrations scheduled to run from August 1 to 10, 2024.
In response to the request, the IGP has directed Deputy Inspectors General of Operations and Intelligence, as well as Assistant Inspectors General across Nigeria, to ensure the safety of the protesters. This move reflects the IGP’s commitment to uphold public safety during the nationwide protests.
Adegboruwa’s initial letter, dated July 26, 2024, was addressed to the IGP and highlighted the legal basis for the request. It cited sections of the Nigerian Constitution and Police Act that mandate police protection for public meetings and rallies.
The letter detailed plans for protests at Eagle’s Square in Abuja and other public spaces across Nigeria’s capital cities and local government headquarters. The demonstrations are set to begin at 8 a.m. daily and could extend to public highways and other accessible areas.
