On Thursday, armed bandits launched another deadly attack along the Tsafe-Funtua Road in Zamfara State, leaving one police officer dead and many travelers abducted, including an expatriate.
The ambush occurred near Kwanar Rogo, a known trouble spot on this busy highway. Eyewitnesses reported that the heavily armed bandits blocked the road for several hours, targeting vehicles passing through the area. According to local residents, the attackers carried sophisticated weapons and fired at any moving vehicle in sight, causing panic among commuters.
One of the survivors of the attack, who wished to remain anonymous, shared his experience with DAILY POST. He explained that the bandits suddenly opened fire from different directions, creating confusion and chaos on the road. He said, “They were shooting everywhere, and we had no place to hide.” Several travelers, including workers from a local construction company, were caught in the gunfire.
Among the victims of the attack was an expatriate who was traveling in a Toyota RAV4 Jeep, escorted by a police officer. The officer was shot and killed instantly during the attack. The expatriate, along with several other passengers, was abducted and taken to an undisclosed location by the bandits. The number of those abducted remains unclear, but eyewitnesses say it was a large group of people, likely including both locals and travelers.
The attack continued for hours before security forces arrived. By the time a combined team of security personnel managed to reach the scene and clear the road, the bandits had already fled with their captives. Villagers in the area expressed concern over the delayed response by the authorities, which they believe gave the criminals more time to escape.
