Armed bandits launched a violent attack on several communities near Wanke, close to Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, abducting about 100 individuals, including a local Chief Imam. The attack has left residents fearful, as it marks the second time the Imam has been taken by bandits.
Eyewitnesses described the situation as terrifying. One survivor, speaking to the BBC Hausa Service, shared that families are fleeing the area, fearing further attacks. He recounted that the assailants targeted multiple areas, including Sabon Layi and Dogon Hayi, each experiencing mass abductions, with more than 50 people taken from each community.
The survivor vividly described the bandits’ pursuit, saying they chased residents on motorbikes, including women and children, treating them “as if they were chasing animals.” He explained that some villagers were dragged from their homes or intercepted as they tried to flee, forced into the bush in groups by the attackers.
In addition to the abductions, the bandits looted motorcycles, farm produce, phones, and other goods. Shops were reportedly broken into, and essential provisions stolen, adding to the distress of local communities.
“These terrorists attacked Gira, Ruwa Kusa, Dogon Hayi and Gidan Kado communities, where they stole motorcycles, farm produce and phones. They burgled shops and stole provisions,” a source told DAILY POST.
The affected communities—Gira, Ruwa Kusa, Dogon Hayi, and Gidan Kado—are still reeling from the incident. Local authorities in Wanke were reportedly alerted about the attack, but no immediate action was taken to assist or protect residents.
