The Bauchi Emirate Council has withdrawn the traditional title of Senator Shehu Buba Umar, who represents the Bauchi South senatorial district in the National Assembly.
The council’s decision comes after the Senator, a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), allegedly made disparaging remarks about Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State. Senator Umar, formerly holding the traditional title of ‘Mandarin Bauchi’, had accused the governor of mismanaging palliative items meant for the people of Bauchi.
During a press briefing last week, Senator Umar claimed that the palliative items, provided by the APC-led federal government to help citizens cope with economic difficulties, were diverted by the state government. According to the Senator, instead of distributing the supplies to those in need, the government allegedly sold them.
In response, the Bauchi Emirate Council, in a letter dated August 14, 2024, confirmed the revocation of Senator Umar’s title. The decision followed a council meeting where his alleged actions were deliberated.
The council stated that the senator’s behavior did not align with the values and traditions of the Bauchi Emirate, leading to the decision to strip him of his traditional role within the community.
