A devastating boat accident on the River Benue has left 20 people dead, while 11 others were rescued alive, according to the Benue State Police Command.
The tragedy occurred late Saturday night in Agatu Local Government Area (LGA) when a wooden canoe capsized during a journey to Odenyi in Nasarawa State.
The canoe, primarily used by traders traveling to and from the Ocholonya market in Agatu LGA, met its fate after colliding with a submerged tree.
Witnesses revealed that the boat was dangerously overloaded with passengers and goods at the time of the incident. Despite warnings about the risks of the journey, passengers insisted on traveling late in the evening, eager to return home after a long day at the market.
Superintendent Catherine Anene, the Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the grim details. “20 bodies had been recovered from the river,” she stated, adding that search and rescue efforts are still in progress. So far, 11 survivors have been found, offering a glimmer of hope amid the tragedy.
