The Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Aondona Dajoh, has directed security agencies to immediately release all individuals, mostly young people, who were arrested during recent protests across various parts of the state.
The order was given during an emergency sitting of the House on Tuesday, following strong public criticism and growing concern over the arrest and detention of citizens who took part in demonstrations. These protests were largely sparked by widespread insecurity affecting several communities in Benue.
During the session, Speaker Dajoh made it clear that the Assembly would not tolerate any action that undermines the rights of the people. He reminded lawmakers and law enforcement officers that peaceful protest is part of the fundamental rights of every Nigerian citizen.
“Peaceful protest is a constitutional right,” he stated. “No one should be punished for exercising their voice in a democratic society.”
The Speaker’s words received loud support within the chamber, with lawmakers reportedly clapping in agreement. Outside the Assembly, human rights groups and civil society organizations have also welcomed the move, calling it a much-needed step toward upholding the law.
Dajoh also noted that security operatives must carry out their duties responsibly. He warned against the use of force on non-violent demonstrators and urged for a more respectful approach in future public engagements.
In response to the arrests, the Assembly said it would begin a full investigation to understand the circumstances that led to the detention of protesters. The goal, according to lawmakers, is to ensure such incidents do not happen again.
