Benue Killings: NAF Deploys More Fighter Jets to North Central

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF), in response to continued violence in Benue State and across parts of the North Central region, sent more fighter aircraft to support military operations under Operation Whirl Stroke (OPWS).

This move is part of wider efforts to calm the rising insecurity caused by bandit attacks, kidnappings, and ongoing clashes in several communities. A statement from NAF explained that the deployment was meant to support ground troops and build public confidence in the military’s ability to restore law and order.

To get a clearer picture of the ongoing mission, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hasan Bala Abubakar, visited the Tactical Air Command headquarters in Makurdi on June 17, 2025.

During his visit, he was joined by several top military officials, including the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, a representative from the Navy, Rear Admiral Olusegun Ferreira, and commanders from different arms of the operation.

At the meeting, officials discussed the current level of progress in their joint missions. Updates were given about recent air operations and how the newly deployed aircraft are helping the military identify enemy positions and respond quickly with precision airstrikes.

“Our aircraft have continued to conduct surveillance, armed reconnaissance, close air support, and precision strike missions with remarkable success,” Air Marshal Abubakar stated.

He also noted that the Federal Government’s main goal is to bring long-term peace to the Middle Belt. The recent missions, he said, have already resulted in the destruction of criminal hideouts and illegal militia camps across Benue, Nasarawa, and Taraba states.

“These outcomes reinforce our unwavering commitment to protecting innocent lives and supporting national peace-building initiatives,” he said.

The CAS added that the military will not back down until peace is fully restored.

“The Nigerian Air Force will continue to deliver timely, decisive air support in synergy with sister services, ensuring the protection of lives and properties while advancing our mission of restoring peace to the Middle Belt and beyond.”
