Benue Land Not Up for Grabs, Enforce Anti-Grazing Law – PDP tells FG

The Benue State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has asked the Federal Government to take swift and full action to enforce the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law of 2017. The party clearly stated that no land in Benue is available for any form of grazing reserves or settlements.

The former ruling party in Benue made this known through a statement from its State Publicity Secretary, Bemgba Iortyom.

According to him, the continuous attacks on villages across the state are a serious danger to peace, people’s means of survival, and the general safety of citizens. He noted that the law, which was passed after wide consultation with the people, remains the best step toward ending the killings and displacements happening in the state.

“This law was borne out of deep consultation and reflects the collective will of the people of Benue. It is not just legislation—it is our shield for peace and survival,” the statement read.

The PDP cautioned the Federal Government, and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in particular, against any decision that could involve taking parts of Benue land to create grazing reserves or any similar projects. The party stressed that such a move would go against the will and rights of the Benue people.

“There is no vacant land in Benue for external interests. Our land is ancestral and sacred. Any attempt to grab it under any guise will be strongly resisted,” the PDP declared.

In addition to addressing the federal authorities, the party also called on Governor Hyacinth Alia to stay firm in defending the 2017 law. The PDP urged him not to give in to any kind of pressure that may lead to weakening or removing parts of the legislation. Any such act, they warned, would amount to breaking the trust of the people.

“The time for talking is over. Our people are dying, communities are being razed, and farms are abandoned. What is needed now is action, not rhetoric,” the statement emphasized.
