Northern lawmakers are under fire from the Coalition of Northern Groups (CNG) for supporting the call for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). This unexpected support has sparked a heated debate across Nigeria, with the CNG voicing strong opposition.
The demand for Kanu’s release has gained momentum recently, with several prominent Nigerians, including federal lawmakers, joining the call. However, the CNG has condemned this move, labeling it as a betrayal of the nation’s trust. The group argues that such actions are unpatriotic and undermine the sacrifices of those who died due to Kanu’s secessionist activities.
The Coalition of Northern Groups expressed particular disdain for northern lawmakers backing this cause. They stated, “We reject this legislative rascality,” emphasizing their shock and disappointment that representatives from the North would support what they describe as the release of a terrorist.
The group reminded the public of their 2017 report to the United Nations, in which they accused Kanu of terrorism against innocent Nigerians. The CNG has consistently advocated for the IPOB to be declared a terrorist organization, reinforcing their stance against Kanu and his activities.
In their statement, signed by National Coordinator Comrade Jamilu Aliyu Charanchi, the CNG criticized the northern lawmakers for their perceived betrayal, asking, “Where were they when Nnamdi Kanu and his people were killing and are still killing the Northerners in the east?” The group also questioned the lawmakers’ priorities, accusing them of acting in their own interests rather than for the benefit of their constituents.
The CNG believes that supporting Kanu’s release would demoralize security forces and disrespect the memory of those who lost their lives due to IPOB’s actions. They expressed disappointment but not surprise at southeastern lawmakers, governors, and leaders for supporting Kanu, given their long-standing association with his cause.
The CNG then vowed to continue opposing any efforts to release Nnamdi Kanu, stating, “We will not let the blood of our loved ones be in vain. We will not let terrorism prevail.”
