Senators representing the northern states of Nigeria, including Kano, Katsina, and Jigawa, have voiced deep concern over ongoing electricity issues severely affecting their regions.
Under the banner of the Northern Senators Forum (NSF), they highlighted the urgent need for the federal government to take immediate steps to bring back reliable power supply, which has been disrupted by frequent outages due to infrastructure vandalism and issues with the national power grid.
The senators emphasize that the lack of stable electricity is causing significant economic strain on residents. Local businesses, hospitals, and other essential services are struggling to function under these conditions.
The power outages have forced many small businesses to either scale back their operations or close temporarily due to the high cost of alternative power sources, like diesel generators.
Hospitals, likewise, are facing increased operational costs, which hampers their ability to deliver quality healthcare services. Everyday life has become harder and more expensive, with livelihoods and community welfare increasingly at risk.
In a statement, Senator Abdulaziz Musa Yar’adua, representing Katsina Central and chairman of the NSF, urged President Bola Tinubu and his administration to take swift and decisive action to alleviate the hardships faced by their constituents.
The statement reads: “Enhance Security, Implement measures to prevent future vandalism and protect power infrastructure. Support Renewable Energy, Back KEDCO’s initiatives for renewable energy and Mini Grid solutions to provide sustainable power options.
“The Forum acknowledges the progress made in power distribution under the current administration and appreciates efforts to improve the sector. However, the situation demands urgent attention to alleviate the suffering of constituents and revitalize economic activities.”
