The Deputy Controller of the Maximum Correctional Center in Kirikiri, Lagos, Michael Anugwa, has confirmed that popular Nigerian crossdresser, Idris Okuneye, known widely as Bobrisky, was placed in a separate cell during his time at the facility. This statement came in response to claims that Bobrisky was given special treatment and housed outside the correctional center after his conviction.
The issue arose when a social media personality, Martins Otse, better known as VeryDarkMan, made a video accusing the prison authorities of granting Bobrisky privileges. Otse alleged that Bobrisky, who had been sentenced to six months in prison for a crime, was provided an apartment outside the custodial facility instead of being held within the correctional center.
However, Deputy Controller Anugwa, while addressing the House of Representatives Joint Committee on Financial Crimes and Reformatory Institutions, dismissed these claims. He clarified that Bobrisky was never kept outside the correctional facility.
According to Anugwa, Bobrisky was lawfully admitted into the Kirikiri facility on April 13, 2024, after receiving the necessary transfer order and warrant from the Ikoyi Correctional Center. He further explained that Bobrisky arrived at the facility late in the evening, around 10:30 p.m., and therefore, his biometric registration was completed the following day.
Anugwa also revealed that Bobrisky spent ten days at the Medium Correctional Center before being transferred to the Maximum Correctional Center. This transfer occurred after Bobrisky refused to eat the prison-provided food. Following this, Bobrisky applied for self-feeding privileges, which were approved. He named two individuals, Ogunleye Abiola and Moji Ogunleye, to bring him food from outside the prison.
During his admission, the prison staff noticed Bobrisky’s unique physical characteristics. Though legally recognized as a man, he had physical traits, such as breasts, that made it inappropriate to place him in the general male cell. As a result, the authorities decided to house him in a separate cell for his safety and comfort.
Anugwa also mentioned that during Bobrisky’s stay in the separate cell, he received a total of 39 visitors.
