Borno Governor Releases N8bn for Retired Teachers’ Gratuities

Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has approved the release of N8 billion to address outstanding pension and gratuity payments for retired teachers. The funds will settle unpaid entitlements owed to retired primary school teachers and other civil servants in the state.

Governor Zulum made the announcement on Wednesday during a meeting at the Council Chamber of the Government House in Maiduguri. He clarified that the approved amount is intended to cover pension and gratuity liabilities accumulated between 2019 and 2021.

“Since I assumed office in 2019, we have paid about N25 billion to settle gratuities for those who have worked with local and state governments,” Zulum noted during his address.

This is not the first time Zulum has prioritized resolving pension-related issues. In June and September 2019, his administration released N3 billion to pay gratuities for 1,684 retirees who had left service between 2013 and 2019.

Additionally, over N12 billion was paid in 2020 to clear liabilities for retirees who exited between 2013 and 2017.

The governor also reassured workers that his administration is committed to settling all outstanding payments before the conclusion of his term in 2027. “Insh’Allah, I will clear all the backlog of gratuities before I leave office in 2027,” he promised.
