President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue State has stirred widespread criticism after schoolchildren were reportedly made to stand in the rain to welcome him.
The visit, which was meant to be a condolence trip to communities affected by deadly attacks, has taken a controversial turn due to the manner in which it was organized.
President Tinubu arrived in Benue State to offer sympathy to victims of a recent tragedy in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area. The area has been mourning the loss of over 300 people who were killed in attacks believed to have been carried out by suspected herdsmen.
Many residents hoped the President’s visit would bring attention to their suffering and perhaps offer support.
However, the scene that played out in the state capital, Makurdi, seemed more like a political event than a condolence visit.
Witnesses, who spoke to DAILY POST, reported that crowds, including schoolchildren from public schools, were positioned along the streets to wave and cheer for the President and Benue State Governor Hyacinth Alia. Many of the children stood under heavy rainfall for hours without proper cover or protection.
