A tragic incident has struck the Bassa community in Shiroro Local Government Area, Niger State, where a bomb explosion claimed the life of a young child and severely injured four others. The devastating event occurred when the children, unaware of the danger, encountered the explosive device while playing.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion happened on Thursday as the children were on their way to a nearby farm. The device, believed to have been left behind by suspected bandits, detonated, killing one child instantly. The other four children suffered critical injuries, with three reportedly losing their legs. They are currently receiving medical care at the IBB Specialist Hospital in Minna.
Local resident Ahmed Almustapha revealed the personal toll the incident has taken on his family, stating, “Three of the victims were siblings and my sister’s children.” He also told PUNCH that this was the second explosion in Bassa within a month. “The first explosion, which occurred two weeks ago, also claimed a life when a victim was heading to the farm,” he added.
The Commissioner for Transport, Hadiza Kuta, confirmed the tragedy, expressing her condolences and stating, “It was very unfortunate. One person died and has been buried. Four others who were injured have been taken to the hospital for treatment.”
Residents have called on the Niger State Government and federal authorities to enhance security and provide support, enabling farmers to safely return to their fields. Meanwhile, the Niger State Police Command has yet to release an official statement, as investigations into the incident continue.
