The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has initiated an investigation into the unfortunate experience of Nigeria’s national football team, the Super Eagles, who were reportedly left stranded at a Libyan airport for several hours.
The incident, which occurred over the weekend, has raised significant concerns within the African football governing body.
According to reports, the Nigerian football team, including their technical staff, faced distressing conditions after landing at the Libyan airport. The team was allegedly instructed by Libyan authorities to land at that specific airport, but upon arrival, they were left stranded without proper assistance.
CAF, in a statement released on Monday afternoon, expressed deep concern over the incident and stressed that it would not be taken lightly. The organization also confirmed that it had been in contact with both the Nigerian and Libyan authorities to gather more information about the ordeal.
The CAF statement read, “The Confederation Africaine de Football (CAF) has been in contact with the Libyan and Nigerian authorities after it was informed that the Nigerian National Football Team (‘Super Eagles’) and their technical team were stranded in distressing conditions for several hours at an airport that they were allegedly instructed to land at by the Libyan authorities.”
The matter has now been referred to CAF’s Disciplinary Board for further investigation. The board will examine whether any violations of CAF’s Statutes and Regulations occurred and will determine the necessary actions to be taken against those responsible for the situation..
