Human rights lawyer and activist Dele Farotimi has been granted bail by a magistrates’ court in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.
The court, presided over by Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun, ruled on the bail application during a hearing on Friday. Farotimi was granted bail in the sum of N30 million, with specific conditions attached.
As part of the bail terms, Farotimi is required to provide two responsible sureties who will vouch for him. The court also ordered him to surrender his international passport.
In addition, the magistrate barred Farotimi from granting any media interviews while the legal proceedings continue.
Farotimi’s legal troubles stem from allegations made by Afe Babalola, an elder statesman and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). According to the Ekiti Police Command, Babalola accused Farotimi of criminal defamation related to statements in the activist’s recently published book.
