Beatrice Ekweremadu, who was sentenced to prison in the United Kingdom last year, has been released and is now back in Nigeria.
Beatrice, the wife of former Deputy Senate President Ike Ekweremadu, was convicted alongside her husband and a medical doctor, Obinna Obeta for organ trafficking.
The Ekweremadus and Dr. Obeta were found guilty of attempting to harvest the organ of a young Nigerian boy in order to save the life of their ailing daughter, Sophia.
The court revealed that the boy, who was working as a street hawker in Lagos, was brought to the UK under false pretenses. The plan was uncovered, leading to their arrest and subsequent trial.
While Ike Ekweremadu received a 10-year prison sentence, Beatrice was sentenced to six years. During the trial, Beatrice had pleaded poor health as a mitigating factor, but the court still handed down her sentence, noting the gravity of the offense. Dr. Obeta was also sentenced for his role in the illegal scheme.
Reports says that Beatrice returned to Nigeria on Tuesday. Sources close to the family informed Daily Post that her arrival has been met with celebrations in Enugu State, the Ekweremadus’ hometown.
