Justice Mohammed Uwais, one of Nigeria’s most distinguished jurists and a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has died at the age of 88. The news of his passing was confirmed in the early hours of Friday, June 6, 2025, by the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Ondo State, Dr. Kayode Ajulo.
Justice Uwais held the position of Chief Justice of Nigeria from 1995 until he stepped down in 2006. During his tenure, he was widely known for his calm demeanor, depth of legal knowledge, and dedication to upholding justice. He presided over several landmark judgments and was regarded as a leading voice in Nigeria’s judiciary during a period of major political transition.
After his retirement, Uwais continued to serve the country by heading the Presidential Electoral Reform Committee. This committee was set up by the late President Umaru Musa Yar’Adua to examine and propose changes to the electoral system in Nigeria.
The panel featured several well-known Nigerians, including Bishop Matthew Hassan Kukah and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Dr. Olisa Agbakoba. The recommendations from that committee were widely discussed and had a lasting impact on electoral reforms in the country.
