The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken steps to address the prolonged salary and benefit issues affecting the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) of federal universities and retired workers under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme.
This decision comes after months of withheld payments that led to a shutdown of many university services, as NASU and the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) engaged in an indefinite strike to protest the non-payment of their members.
In an official announcement on Saturday, Bawa Mokwa, Director of Press and Public Relations for the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, confirmed that payments to NASU members have begun, with many recipients already acknowledging that they have received their funds.
The statement read, “The Federal Government has released funds for payment of withheld salary of Non-Academic Staff Union of Federal Universities.
“According to the OAGF, the Federal Government has also released funds for payment of benefits to retirees under the Nigerian Union of Pensioners Contributory Pension Scheme Sector.
“The OAGF said payments to the Non-Academic Staff of Federal Universities had commenced and many have confirmed receipt.”
