No fewer than five people have been killed by a suspected explosion involving a military-grade mortar bomb in Kano. 15 others sustained varying degrees of injuries
The incident occurred in a residential area, as witnesses reported hearing a loud bang, followed by chaos and confusion as people ran for safety.
Emergency responders, including police officers, soldiers, and medical teams, rushed to the scene to attend to the victims and control the situation.
The Commissioner of Police in Kano State, Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, arrived at the blast site shortly after the explosion. He confirmed that the blast may have come from a military weapon that was not properly handled.
“I received a call that something serious had happened. When I arrived, I found that it was a suspected explosion—possibly a military mortar bomb. Fifteen people were injured, and unfortunately, five died,” he said.
The police commissioner noted that some of the injured victims were taken to hospitals nearby for urgent treatment. The police also began working with other security agencies to investigate the cause of the explosion.
“The situation is still under investigation, but we understand the vehicle involved may have come from Yobe State. Preliminary findings suggest the explosive material was being transported by a trailer, but it remains unclear whether the vehicle was carrying military personnel or contractors,” he added.
While the full details of the blast are still unknown, police officials said they are doing everything possible to gather accurate information. They have not yet confirmed whether the mortar bomb belonged to the Nigerian military or if it was being moved illegally.
“Security agencies are currently investigating the incident. The facts will be clearer once the investigation is completed,” the Commissioner noted, calling on residents to stay calm and avoid spreading rumors.
