Former Super Eagles coach, Christian Chukwu, has died at the age of 74.
The football icon passed away earlier today, although details about the cause of his death have not been officially disclosed yet.
Chukwu, fondly known as “Chairman,” had previously battled serious health issues. Back in 2019, he received medical treatment in London after receiving support from the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) and billionaire Femi Otedola, who covered his medical expenses.
While his health improved in the years following, the news of his passing has left fans and former teammates mourning a great loss.
Born on January 4, 1951, Chukwu was a legendary defender who captained the Nigerian national team, the Green Eagles, to their first Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) title in 1980. He was not only celebrated for his on-pitch leadership but also for his contributions to the game off the pitch after he retired as a player.
Chukwu went on to coach the national team, the Super Eagles, from 2003 to 2005. Under his leadership, the team reached the semi-finals of the 2004 AFCON held in Tunisia. He also managed various clubs within and outside Nigeria, including Enugu Rangers and Kenya’s national team.
In 2021, false news about Chukwu’s death spread widely, which he publicly denied. During his 70th birthday celebration, he said: “I am terribly embarrassed with this news that I am dead. Several people have been calling me from across the world since the news broke. I am still investigating the source of the story.”
