The ongoing political tension in Rivers State may be coming to an end as suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara reportedly met with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, to seek reconciliation.
According to reliable sources, the meeting took place at Wike’s private residence in Abuja.
Fubara, who was accompanied by prominent political figures including Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and former Ogun State Governor Olusegun Osoba, is said to have initiated the peace effort in a bid to resolve the lingering political crisis in his state.
An insider who was privy to the development, but requested anonymity, told DAILY POST, “There was a meeting and I can confirm that.” However, when asked if the meeting could lead to a reversal of the emergency situation in Rivers State, the source replied, “That I can’t confirm but all I know is that there was a meeting.”
Sources also revealed that upon arrival at Wike’s residence, Fubara walked directly into the living room, described as “a familiar terrain,” where he reportedly appealed to the Minister for reconciliation. The meeting is believed to be a follow-up to the earlier discussion between Fubara and President Bola Tinubu, which reportedly took place in London.
The crisis between Fubara and Wike started shortly after Fubara assumed office as governor in 2023. Their political disagreement escalated, drawing national attention and sparking concerns over the stability of the oil-rich state.
To prevent the situation from turning into a major security issue, especially with threats from Niger Delta militants to destroy vital oil installations, President Tinubu declared a state of emergency in Rivers State. The decision came with sweeping actions: the suspension of Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the entire state assembly for a six-month period. A Sole Administrator was appointed to manage the affairs of the state during the suspension.
Wike, speaking previously on the issue, noted that he wanted Fubara removed from office entirely. However, President Tinubu stepped in and opted for suspension instead, aiming to calm tensions rather than fuel further instability.
