Investigative journalist Fisayo Soyombo has been freed by the Nigerian Army after spending three days in their custody. The news was confirmed by his legal representative, Abimbola Ojenike, during a phone interview on Friday evening.
Ojenike stated, “He has just been released some minutes ago, and we are trying to find our way out of the cantonment. He is now free and has been released to his lawyers. Technically, this means that if his attention is required, his lawyers will have to produce him, but it is not a standard bail process.”
Soyombo’s detention had drawn significant public and media attention, with calls for his immediate release spreading across social platforms. The Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), a media organization founded by Soyombo, played a central role in keeping the public informed about his situation.
On X (formerly known as Twitter), FIJ confirmed that Soyombo had been held in military custody for three days. They also provided updates urging authorities to respect press freedom and the rights of journalists.
