The Kano State Government has voiced strong opposition against the Federal Government’s proposed tax reform bills, labeling the reforms as poorly timed and detrimental to the well-being of the state’s residents.
Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, represented by his deputy, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, addressed a crowd at Filin Mahaha, Kofar Naisa, during a New Year celebration featuring music and cultural displays. The deputy governor criticized the tax reforms, stating they were “ill-timed, lopsided and inimical to the unity of the country.”
“Nigerians in general, and the North in particular, are groaning under hyper inflation and unprecedented insecurity, therefore the Presidency should pay more attention to tackling extreme poverty and hunger, especially in the northern part of the country.
“This tax reform bill is not the solution to our economic challenges. Kano State stands firmly against any policy that negatively affects the welfare of our people,” he said.
The gathering, attended by thousands, erupted in applause as he reiterated that Kano would not support policies that negatively impact its citizens.
During the event, the deputy governor also touched on major political milestones in Kano, including the Supreme Court’s 2024 ruling affirming Governor Yusuf’s electoral victory and the reinstatement of Emir Malam Muhammadu Sanusi II. Calling the latter a triumph of the people’s will, he urged outsiders to respect Kano’s traditions and laws.
