BREAKING: Nanloong Takes Over as Plateau Assembly Speaker Following Dewan’s Resignation

The member representing Mikang Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Nanloong Daniel (APC), has emerged as the new Speaker of the House.

This change in leadership came after the resignation of Gabriel Dewan of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), who was the Speaker until now. The emergency sitting where Nanloong was elected took place at the temporary Assembly Complex located at the Old Government House in Jos.

Nanloong Daniel, who previously served as Majority Leader during the 9th Assembly, was picked unanimously by the members of the House. The selection followed a critical meeting held behind closed doors. Sources confirmed that Governor Caleb Mutfwang, former Speaker Gabriel Dewan, and several lawmakers were part of the meeting.

This private gathering was arranged to help calm the rising political tension in Plateau State. According to insiders, the lawmakers agreed that a change in the Assembly’s leadership could help restore order and cooperation among the political players in the state.

Deputy Speaker Gwotta Ajang led the emergency session. He took charge of the proceedings and ensured the handover was peaceful.

Dewan, who is the only YPP member in the Assembly, chose to step down voluntarily. A source close to the matter said, “His resignation is a move to bring unity and reduce the unrest affecting the government’s progress.”

It is important to note that this development comes shortly after a ruling by the Abuja Appeal Court, which removed 16 PDP lawmakers from the Assembly. The court ruled that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lacked the proper structure during the 2023 general elections.
