The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has won 10 Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Plateau State following the local government elections held on Wednesday. The results were announced by the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) on Thursday, though the final collation of results is still ongoing.
The Chairman of PLASIEC and Returning Officer for all 17 LGAs, Plangji Cishak, made the announcement at the commission’s headquarters in Jos. Cishak confirmed that the results for 10 LGAs have been declared in favor of the PDP, which currently holds power in the state. The announcement also highlighted that results for the remaining seven LGAs are yet to be finalized.
According to Cishak, the PDP secured chairmanship positions in the following 10 LGAs:
- Barkin Ladi (B/Ladi)
- Mikang
- Shendam
- Bassa
- Riyom
- Jos South
- Jos East
- Kanam
- Qua’an Pan
- Langtang South
The results for the other seven LGAs still in contention include:
- Pankshin
- Mangu
- Wase
- Jos North
- Kanke
- Bokkos
- Langtang North
The election was conducted across all 17 LGAs and more than 300 wards in Plateau State. Voter turnout was encouraged by a public holiday declared by Governor Caleb Mutfwang on Wednesday. The holiday was later extended to Thursday to allow for the final collation of results and to ensure smooth proceedings.
Governor Mutfwang’s decision to declare the public holiday was part of efforts to ensure greater voter participation in the local elections, which are crucial to the administration of the state at the grassroots level.
Although the PDP has already claimed victories in a majority of the LGAs, the final outcome will depend on the results from the remaining seven LGAs, which are expected to be announced soon.
