The Social Democratic Party has suspended its National Chairman, Shehu Gabam, following accusations of financial wrongdoing and improper use of party resources.
In an official statement shared on Tuesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Araba Aiyenigba, it was announced that Gabam, along with two other senior officials—National Auditor Nnadi Clarkson and National Youth Leader Chukwuma Uchechukwu—had been suspended. They are accused of being involved in several questionable financial dealings that allegedly violated party rules.
Aiyenigba noted that the suspended members were found to have taken part in unauthorized financial activities. These included moving money without the knowledge or permission of the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), creating opportunities for personal gain, and shifting funds to unapproved channels.
“The suspended officials were linked to a series of unauthorised financial transactions, personal enrichment schemes, and diversion of funds without NWC approval,” the statement said.
The issue became more serious when Gabam reportedly submitted a financial report to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) without getting proper approval from the party. According to Aiyenigba, the report was not only submitted to INEC without consent but was also printed in national newspapers, which brought the matter to public attention and caused unrest within the party.
In response to this action, the SDP leadership has reported the matter to security agencies for further investigation. Aiyenigba stated that the party believes the situation could involve criminal acts and is now working with the proper authorities to examine all financial records linked to the suspended officials.
