The Nigerian Senate has taken a decisive step by issuing a warrant of arrest against Julius Berger, a leading construction company, following its consistent disregard for invitations to appear before the Senate Committee on Works. This development came after a resolution passed during a Senate session on Thursday, December 12, 2024.
The motion to take action against Julius Berger was introduced by Senator Osita Ngwu, representing Enugu West. He raised concerns about the company’s failure to attend hearings despite multiple summons. Highlighting the urgency of the issue, Ngwu pointed out that Julius Berger is linked to numerous uncompleted and failed projects across the country.
“If a committee summons any person or entity to come for a committee hearing and that entity does not send a representative or do not appear in any way, the normal thing is to report to the presiding officer and then warrants will be issued,” Ngwu stated.
The call for accountability was further backed by Senator Abdul Ningi from Bauchi Central, who emphasized the Senate’s constitutional authority to compel attendance. Ningi noted that the National Assembly has the power to issue warrants in cases where entities fail to cooperate with investigations, underscoring the Senate’s rules and privileges.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio supported the issuance of the warrant, citing relevant constitutional provisions. While there was some dissent from Senator Adams Oshiomhole, Akpabio affirmed the decision, marking a firm stance against perceived impunity.
