Tensions soared in Daura, Katsina State, as angry protesters gathered outside the residence of former President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday.
This unrest is part of the larger #EndBadGovernance movement sweeping across the nation, which has seen widespread demonstrations against poor governance and economic hardship.
The protest in Daura, unlike some others, escalated quickly. Protesters, voicing their discontent with the current economic situation, attempted to force their way into Buhari’s residence. Eyewitnesses reported that the protesters created a bonfire in front of the house and chanted slogans.
Video clips circulating online showed the crowd shouting “Bama yi! Bama yi! Bama yi!” – a Hausa phrase meaning “we don’t want,” which has become a rallying cry in recent protests.
Amidst the chaos, an unidentified individual from inside Buhari’s residence addressed the crowd. He asked them to choose a representative to speak on camera, assuring them that the message would be shown to the former President.
Despite this attempt to calm the situation, the protesters then redirected their frustration towards the palace of the Emir of Daura, Alhaji Farouk Umar Farouk.
The situation became more tense when security forces tried to disperse the protesters, resulting in one protester being shot in the leg. Despite this, the crowd remained defiant and continued their demonstration.
