President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has expressed deep concern over the recent violence in Rivers State, following the conclusion of the Local Government Area elections held on Saturday. The elections, which resulted in the swearing-in of 23 newly elected council chairmen by Governor Sim Fubara on Sunday, were marred by unrest soon after.
On Monday, hoodlums stormed various Local Government Area (LGA) secretariats across Rivers State, causing destruction and attempting to prevent the newly elected officials from assuming their roles. The violent acts included incidents of arson and explosions, raising alarm about the stability and safety of the region.
In response to the situation, President Tinubu issued a statement through his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, condemning the violent aftermath. The President expressed his dismay at the reports of destruction and urged all political leaders in Rivers State, including Governor Fubara, to maintain calm and handle the matter through lawful means.
Tinubu stressed the importance of upholding the rule of law and urged political leaders and their supporters to refrain from engaging in acts of violence. He also called upon security forces to take immediate action to restore peace and stability in the affected areas.
The statement titled, PRESIDENT TINUBU DECRIES VIOLENCE IN RIVERS, DIRECTS POLICE TO PROVIDE SECURITY TO LOCAL GOVERNMENT OFFICES, reads;
President Bola Tinubu has called on Governor Siminalayi Fubara, political leaders and their supporters in Rivers State to exercise restraint and uphold the rule of law.
In response to recent tensions following last Saturday’s local government council election, the President expressed deep concern over reports of arson and explosions in the state.
He urged all political actors to de-escalate the situation and discourage their supporters from engaging in violence or destructive actions.
President Tinubu directed the police to restore and maintain peace, law, and order immediately.
While instructing law enforcement agencies to bring the situation under control, he emphasised the need to ensure the security of public institutions.
President Tinubu said government facilities built with public funds must be safeguarded from vandalism.
He stressed that self-help has no place in a democratic system, especially after 25 years of continuous democracy.
According to President Tinubu, the judiciary can settle all political disputes, and the outcome of this election should be no exception.
