German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier is currently on a three-day official visit to Nigeria, aimed at bolstering relations between the two nations. On his first day, Steinmeier was welcomed by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at the State House in Abuja.
The ceremonial reception, which began at 11:06 a.m., included the playing of both the German and Nigerian national anthems, followed by a 21-gun salute. Steinmeier also reviewed a guard of honour mounted by the Brigade of Guards.
The German Embassy issued a statement explaining the objectives of the visit, emphasizing Germany’s commitment to strengthening ties with Nigeria. During his time in Abuja, Steinmeier is scheduled to meet Dr. Alieu Omar Touray, President of the ECOWAS Commission, as part of discussions on regional and international cooperation.
The German President’s itinerary extends to Lagos, where he plans to meet business leaders, visit a start-up hub, and interact with prominent figures in Nigeria’s cultural and civil society sectors. His engagements include meetings with Dr. Nike Okundaye of the Nike Art Gallery and renowned writer Prof. Wole Soyinka.
