Former President Muhammadu Buhari has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Chief Edwin Clark, a prominent leader of the Pan Niger Delta Forum (PANDEF).
In a condolence statement issued on Tuesday, Buhari described Clark as an “iconic statesman” whose contributions to the nation would not be forgotten. Buhari noted that Clark’s death was a great loss to Nigeria, particularly to the Niger Delta region, where he was a strong advocate for development and unity.
He acknowledged the late elder statesman’s role in pushing for national reforms and improving the lives of his people.
“Late Chief Edwin Clark was a leader dedicated to reforms whose commitment to the development of his community and the nation would always be remembered. His death caused deep sorrow in his heart, and that of many, and his departure was a loss for the nation,” Buhari stated.
The former president also noted that Clark’s dedication to Nigeria’s unity and progress would be respected by future generations. He urged the Clark family and the people of the Delta region to take pride in the achievements of the late leader and continue to uphold his legacy.
Chief Edwin Clark, who passed away at the age of 97, was known for his unwavering stance on issues affecting the Niger Delta and Nigeria as a whole. His influence spanned decades, during which he played key roles in political and social movements advocating for fairness and development.
Clark’s death was confirmed in a statement released by his family on Tuesday. The statement, signed by Prof. C. C. Clark, read:
