In light of recent concerns about the treatment of Nigerians in Libya, the Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has reassured its citizens of their safety and protection within the North African nation.
These assurances come after the Confederation of African Football (CAF) issued a ruling that found the Libyan Football Association guilty of mistreating the Nigerian team and officials during a recent Nations Cup Qualifying Match held in Libya.
Reports had emerged suggesting that Nigerian nationals in Libya might be facing harassment or mistreatment from local authorities as a reaction to the CAF verdict. Responding swiftly, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs released an official statement to address these worries.
The statement, signed by Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, the ministry’s spokesperson, firmly stated that Nigerians in Libya are currently safe and are able to continue their daily activities without any disruption.
In the statement, the ministry expressed its ongoing dedication to the protection and welfare of Nigerians living abroad. It emphasized that monitoring and addressing any issues concerning Nigerian citizens’ safety remains a priority. This assurance underscores Nigeria’s commitment to the well-being of its people worldwide.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to convey that as of the time of making this statement, Nigerians in Libya are going about their daily activities, devoid of any form of harassment by Libyan authorities, following the verdict of the Confederation of African Football which indicted the Libyan Football Association for their ill-treatment of the Nigerian team and officials while in Libya for a Nations Cup Qualifying Match.
“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to reiterate that the well-being of Nigerian citizens anywhere in the world is a top priority of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and will continue to strive to safeguard it at all times,” the statement read.
