The Defence Headquarters (DHQ) has issued a strong warning to any individual or group advocating for a military takeover in Nigeria, stating that such actions are illegal and treasonable under the Nigerian Constitution.
The military made it clear that they remain committed to democratic governance and will not entertain any unconstitutional attempts to seize power.
In a recent statement released by Brigadier General Tukur Gusau, Director of Defence Information, the DHQ emphasized that the Armed Forces of Nigeria (AFN) have no intention of deviating from their constitutional role of protecting the nation’s territorial integrity and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Brigadier General Gusau reiterated the military’s loyalty to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s administration and their dedication to maintaining the democratic structure of Nigeria.
Gusau directly addressed the recent rise in discussions about a possible military takeover, sparked by a viral video circulating on social media.
“Additionally, those advocating for a military takeover, as seen in a viral video, should be aware that such actions are treasonable under the Constitution,” he said, making it clear that the military considers any suggestion of a coup as an attempt to undermine the nation’s legal and democratic frameworks.
The Defence Headquarters assured Nigerians that the peace and stability currently being experienced across the country are the results of both President Tinubu’s leadership and the commitment of the Armed Forces.
According to Gusau, the Nigerian military remains steadfast in its duties, not only to protect Nigeria from external threats but also to ensure internal security by preventing any unconstitutional changes of government.
The statement further noted that the military, alongside other security agencies, will take strong action against anyone promoting ideas or movements that threaten the country’s democratic order.
“The military remains focused on achieving its statutory responsibilities of protecting the nation’s integrity,” Gusau said, while emphasizing that the Armed Forces are equipped and prepared to handle any internal or external challenges that might arise.
