The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), Taraba State chapter, has strongly reacted to the brutal killings in Benue State, calling the recent attack in Yelwata community a painful reminder of the growing insecurity in the country.
The former Taraba CAN Chairman, Rev. Fr. Williams Awoshiri, made his thoughts known in a statement shared with journalists in Jalingo on Friday. He described the killings as deeply troubling and said it was time for the Federal Government to stop offering only words and take serious action.
“The continued massacre of defenceless Nigerians, many of whom are women, children, and the elderly, is a tragic stain on the conscience of our nation and an indictment on those charged with the responsibility of safeguarding lives,” Awoshiri said.
While he acknowledged President Bola Tinubu’s recent visit to Benue State, Awoshiri noted that such visits must not stop at speeches or appearances. He stressed that Nigerians need real change on the ground, not just official visits.
“We insist that it must go beyond a ceremonial show of concern. What Nigerians desperately need at this moment is tangible, decisive, and sustained action to bring an end to these acts of terror,” the statement read.
CAN urged the country’s top leaders, especially those in charge of security, to take their roles seriously and do everything possible to stop the bloodshed. The group noted that the killers causing fear in communities are not stronger than the combined strength and resources of Nigeria.
“The killers terrorising our communities are not greater than the collective strength, intelligence, and resources of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” it added.
Awoshiri further warned that if silence and delay continue, the situation could become even worse. He said the lives lost must not be forgotten and that history would judge those who chose to remain quiet.
“Silence, inaction, or lip service is no longer acceptable. The blood of the innocent cries out, and history will remember where each of us stood in these perilous times,” he added.
In addition, CAN extended its support to the people and government of Benue State, praying for those who lost loved ones and asking for quick healing for the injured.
“We pray for divine comfort for the bereaved families and quick recovery for the wounded. Enough is enough,” Awoshiri stated.
