The Vatican has begun its process to elect a new Pope today, May 7, 2025. Following the death of Pope Francis on April 21, 2025, 133 cardinals have gathered in the Sistine Chapel for a secretive conclave to determine his successor. This process is expected to take place in complete isolation, away from the prying eyes of the outside world.

The first ballot is set for the afternoon, but experts suggest that a swift conclusion to the election is unlikely. The cardinals will need to secure a two-thirds majority in order to elect the 267th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church.

Given the size and influence of the global Catholic community, which includes over 1.4 billion followers, the selection of a new Pope is a matter of great significance not only for the church but for the world at large.

As is customary in such a highly secretive process, all cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to vote, while those who are older are excluded from participating in the election.

Furthermore, in keeping with the traditions of the conclave, the cardinals are required to surrender their mobile phones, smartphones, and any other digital devices, ensuring that their discussions and votes remain private and protected from external influences.

Cardinal Pietro Parolin, the current Secretary of State, is considered the favorite by many media outlets and bookmakers to succeed Pope Francis. At 70 years old, Parolin holds the position of the most senior cardinal and will preside over the conclave. His experience and stature within the Vatican make him a prominent candidate in the eyes of many.

As per Vatican tradition, the first round of voting will culminate in the symbolic signaling of either black or white smoke from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel. Black smoke will indicate that no decision has been reached, while white smoke will announce the selection of a new Pope.
