Catholic Priest Allegedly Shoots Boy Over Fireworks During New Year Mass in Imo State

A Catholic priest is alleged to have fatally shot a young boy after the latter set off fireworks, commonly known as knockouts, within the church premises. The incident unfolded in Amaimo, Ikeduru Local Government Area of Imo State, during the New Year Mass on January 1, 2025.

Eyewitnesses claim the priest, whose identity remains undisclosed, reacted in shock when the boy ignited the fireworks. According to a Facebook post by the handle “For The Love of Anambra,” the priest reportedly picked up a firearm and fired at the boy, resulting in his death.

Social media platforms have been flooded with reactions to the incident. On Facebook, users expressed a mix of disbelief and condemnation. Malachy Chukwunyereugo commented, “He will spend the rest of his life in prison.” Another user, Peace Ijeoma, remarked, “It’s disheartening to see how religious bigots are defending the priest.”

Meanwhile, the Imo State Police Command has launched an investigation. The spokesperson, Henry Okoye, stated, “We have launched a detailed investigation to ascertain the remote facts surrounding the incident. Further developments on the case will be communicated in due course.”
