Catholic Priest Killed After Abduction in Kaduna, Diocese Confirms

A Catholic priest in Kaduna State, Rev. Fr. Sylvester Okechukwu, has been killed just a day after he was kidnapped. His tragic death has raised fresh concerns about the worsening insecurity in the region, with local authorities calling for stronger measures to protect religious leaders and their communities.

The Catholic Diocese of Kafanchan confirmed the priest’s death in a statement released by its Chancellor, Rev. Fr. Jacob Shanet. Okechukwu, who was the pastor of St. Mary Catholic Church in Tachira, Kaura Local Government Area, was abducted from his residence on Tuesday night and killed early Wednesday morning.

“After being taken by his abductors, we regret to inform you that Fr. Sylvester was cruelly killed in the early hours of Wednesday, March 5. It is yet to be determined why he was killed,” Shanet stated.

He described the late priest as a devoted servant of God who dedicated his life to his faith and community.

“This untimely and brutal loss has left us broken and devastated. He was always available and accessible to his parishioners. His untimely death has left an indelible void within our diocesan family, and we share in the pain of his passing with his family, friends, and all those who loved him,” he said.

Shanet also urged members of the Takad community to remain calm and prayerful, warning against any form of retaliation.
