Chelsea FC’s captain, Reece James, is facing another injury setback after being ruled out of the upcoming Premier League match against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium. Head coach Enzo Maresca confirmed on Thursday that the 24-year-old England international has sustained a minor hamstring issue.
James only returned to the pitch in October following a lengthy recovery from an earlier injury that kept him out at the start of the season. However, his latest problem raises fresh concerns about his fitness.
Speaking to reporters, Maresca emphasized the need to be cautious with James, saying, “Reece, unfortunately, felt something small, and we don’t want to take any risks this weekend. Hopefully, it’s not something longer. He felt something, he has to be out, and then we’ll see. It’s his hamstring, a muscle problem.”
This marks yet another blow for the talented right-back, who has struggled with injuries over the past two seasons. Despite these challenges, Maresca remains optimistic about James’ long-term prospects, stating, “For sure. But in this moment it is not happening.”
In addition to James, Chelsea is grappling with a growing list of injury concerns. Cole Palmer and Levi Colwill recently withdrew from England duties due to fitness issues, and doubts remain over the availability of Romeo Lavia, Malo Gusto, Wesley Fofana, and Jadon Sancho for the weekend fixture. “Some of them are better, some of them we’ll test today,” Maresca shared.
The match against Leicester holds special significance for Maresca, as it marks his return to the club he helped guide to Premier League promotion last season. Reflecting on his time with Leicester, he said, “It was a fantastic season because I met good people and in terms of players it was fantastic. I will be thankful to them all my life; we have a special connection.”
