Coalitions For 2027 and Realignments For New Direction by Dr Olu Agunloye

By Dr Olu Agunloye

… the policies, (in)actions of President Tinubu are fast producing a two-party state of APC and SDP, and brewing more commitment to a coalition of consensus for good governance focussed on the people which could lead to victory for the opposition in 2027.

The Nigerian political landscape is in flux and the main procupation is on how to grab power and not how to better the lot of the people or how to tackle the many security challenges. We have witnessed over the months, defections of high-profile politicians including Governors and Senators to the ruling Party, APC under President Tinubu; and we have been told, and we expect that more are still coming. These migrations have been made possible by the policies, actions, and inactions of President Bola Tinubu and his administration, which have been compelling elite and high-profile politicians to join the APC. The goodness of these is that the same policies and governance style of the APC have also created grounds which make it imperative for more and more of the ordinary Nigerians and the youths to migrate to the Social Democratic Party platform where a new direction for Nigeria is being crafted by loyal and patriotic citizens.

Contrary to the school of thought that Nigeria could be sliding into a one-party state, the country is indeed fast becoming a two-party state made up of APC and SDP. We have always known that APC and PDP had been indistinguishable in their capacities for bad governance and programmes that are not in the interest of the people or sustainable. Over the last 12 to 18 months, we have seen the PDP dissolving itself into APC, a process which is also signalling to Nigerians that the mis-managers and ruiners of the polity are coming together under one platform to cause more damages to the rest of the suffering Nigerians.

The main strategy to counter APC ahead of and in the 2027 election is to remain dedicated to good governance and be committed to the people of Nigeria. The details of this strategy will not be disclosed at this stage. But Nigerians must understand that the opposition parties stand a very good chance to defeat APC in 2027 if they are committed to a coalition of consensus for good governance and remain focused to stand for the people.

It is time for well-meaning Nigerians to join the crusade for new direction and new order by the Social Democratic Party driven by the ideology of social justice and not by appetite for power or aggrandisement.

Dr Olu Agunloye,National Secretary, Social Democratic Party (SDP).
