Two individuals, Olufunsho Dayo Chevy and Uwem Udo Nya, have been convicted of oil theft and sentenced to pay a combined fine of N10 million to the Federal Government of Nigeria.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) secured the conviction through its Uyo Zonal Command.
Chevy and Nya, alongside a vessel named MT New Angel and a company called Edi Eurolink Distribution, faced charges of stealing and engaging in unauthorized dealings in petroleum products.
The EFCC revealed that the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Victory apprehended the suspects and handed them over to the EFCC on July 30, 2024.
The case was heard by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu of the Federal High Court in Calabar. Both Chevy and Nya pleaded guilty to the charges against them. Following their plea, the court sentenced them to pay fines of N5 million each.
The EFCC’s Head of Media and Publicity, Dele Oyewale, announced the judgment in a press statement issued on Friday.
