A man identified as Sunday Echeji has been remanded in prison after being accused of cutting off his wife’s hand in a brutal case of domestic violence. The shocking incident, which took place in Ugwuogede village, Ibagwa-Agu, Nsukka Local Government Area, has sparked outrage across Enugu State.

Echeji was arraigned on Friday, January 31, 2025, before the Chief Magistrate Court 1 in Enugu. He is facing charges of attempted murder under Section 275, Subsection A of the Criminal Code CAP 30, Vol. 1 of the Revised Laws of Enugu State, 2024.

Due to the severity of the charges, the Chief Magistrate Court noted that it lacked jurisdiction over the case. As a result, the matter has been transferred to the State Department of Public Prosecution, which will handle further legal proceedings. Until then, Echeji has been remanded at the Enugu State Correctional Centre, where he will remain in custody pending trial at the state High Court.

In response to the disturbing case, the office of the First Lady of Enugu State, led by Mrs. Nkechinyere Mbah, issued a statement on Saturday. The statement noted that the First Lady has been closely monitoring the case and remains committed to ensuring justice for victims of gender-based violence.

“This kind of violence will not be tolerated in our state. Rest assured, we will ensure that justice is served. So, think twice before you ever think of committing such a barbaric or inhumane act or indeed any form of violence because, with this administration, you must face justice,” the statement read.
