A senior police officer has been remanded in Kirikiri Maximum Prison following allegations of raping a 17-year-old girl in his office at the Ogudu police station in Lagos. The officer, identified as Owolabi Akinlolu, a 56-year-old Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP), was ordered to be held in custody by a Magistrate’s Court in Ogba, Lagos.
The incident reportedly occurred on June 29, 2024, when Akinlolu summoned the teenager to his office, claiming that the police had arrested a suspect involved in stealing her phone two weeks earlier. The victim had lost her phone while returning from Ikeja with her grandmother and siblings after being robbed by one-chance criminals. However, upon her arrival at the station, Akinlolu allegedly locked his office door and raped her.
The victim’s mother, Aramide Olupona, accused the police of attempting to cover up the case. She noted that the suspect’s wife and other family members had pleaded with her to drop the charges, as Akinlolu was set to retire in December 2024. Despite the pressure, Olupona refused to back down, insisting on justice for her daughter.
During the court proceedings, the prosecution counsel presented a seven-paragraph affidavit, urging the court to remand Akinlolu. The counsel noted that the alleged crime violates Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015, which addresses defilement. Magistrate O.O. Fagboun granted the request, ordering Akinlolu’s remand in Kirikiri and adjourning the case until March 11 for trial.
